Last month we talked about what goes into being a water garden volunteer, so it’s only appropriate that this month we recognize one our outstanding water garden volunteers, Dorothy Martinez.
For frequent visitors to Hudson Gardens, Dorothy is someone they have met on more than one occasion. On Wednesdays, she can be found waist deep in any one of Hudson Gardens water gardens tending to the beautiful aquatic flora, answering guest questions, or helping a wayward crawdad find its way back to the water. She leads our group of dedicated water garden volunteers and works tirelessly with them to bring a little bit of paradise to a land locked state. She has been a fixture in the world of volunteers at Hudson Gardens since 2012 and is our resident expert on the Victoria Water Lily; a rare natural wonder that is native to South America and is available for public viewing in two locations in the Denver Area.
Dorothy also volunteers with the Denver Botanic Gardens and serves as the President of the Colorado Water Garden Society. The Colorado Water Garden Society (CWGS), formed in 1983, is the first established water garden society in the world, and provides education about water gardening to the public and stimulates the study and culture of water plants. Each year, Dorothy spearheads the annual CWGS plant sale at Hudson Gardens which is from the picture below, you can tell is a labor of love, or maybe a labor of mud?
