Here in Colorado, our growing season is known to be short and challenging. We often see spring snow days and summer heatwaves that can cause problems for home gardens. There are a few tips and tricks to prepare your garden for the growing season.
- Choose the right plants
Choose plants that can tolerate fluctuating temperatures and high alkalinity soils. Some of these include leafy greens, root vegetables like beets and carrots, potatoes, peas, and onions. To effectively grow other plants, it is often recommended to supplement higher quality soil and pay close attention to temperature and water requirements.
- Start your plants indoors
Depending on your elevation, frost-free days may be few and far between. Starting your plants indoors can protect your seedlings from frost and unexpected cold snaps.
- Prepare your garden site
Choose your garden site depending on sun exposure, space, and what type of plants you want to grow. Ensure the area is free of weeds and supplement the soil as needed.
- Keep pollinators in mind
Pollinators are the key to a happy, healthy garden— make your garden a haven for them! This can include planting native, pollinator-friendly plants and making bee baths. You can also take it one step further and learn more about beekeeping.
