The Hudson Gardens is proud to partner with Denver Botanic Gardens to bring the
popular Summer Sensory program to Hudson Gardens this season! Summer Sensory is
a plant-based program designed for seniors and populations with disabilities.
The program seeks to connect people with plants and to offer visitors an
enjoyable change of pace in a safe, restful location while engaging the senses
and providing social enrichment.
Summer Sensory programs are facilitated by two sensory guides and will include
an exploration of plants using the five senses amongst our Chocolate Garden,
Herb Garden, and Dahlia Display Bed. Following the sensory plant exploration,
your group can choose from one of the following additional activities:
-
Flower Arranging
This activity provides hands-on experience creating a seasonal flower
arrangement. Participants learn and perform the steps to create a one of a kind
floral arrangement to take home and enjoy. This activity promotes hand-eye
coordination, fine motor skills and creative expression. Flower Arranging is
suitable for all level-functioning populations.
-
Making a Topiary
Participants learn and perform the steps to create a topiary frame, transplant
an ivy plant and train the plant to the frame. This activity encourages fine
motor skills and creative expression through hands-on work with plant, soil and
topiary materials. Making a Topiary can be geared toward high or low level
functioning populations through modifications of activity.
-
Plant Propagation
This activity is hands-on work with plants and soil materials. Participants
learn to make stem cuttings from hardy houseplants to take home and enjoy. The
activity develops fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in a highly social
setting. Plant Propagation is geared towards high-level functioning populations.
-
Container Herb Gardens
Participants involve their sense of touch, sight and smell while they choose
from a variety of herbs to transplant and create a mini herb garden. This
activity helps trigger memories of the past in a very social setting. Container
Herb Gardens is geared to all level functioning populations.
