Honeybee Hive Management Systems
Wednesday, January 11, 6 - 8 PM
Learn why “bee space” is important and how to choose a management system that
will maximize the efficiency of your hive. Hudson Gardens’ resident Bee Guardian
Bob Shiflet leads this session, which covers the various hive management systems
that are available for housing and maintaining your colonies. You’ll glean
insight as to how the different systems impact seasonal management (including
honey extraction and re-queening), and the importance of selecting compatible
equipment. An emphasis is placed on hive management systems that are compatible
with “natural” beekeeping methods, which are minimally invasive, chemical free,
and non-toxic.
Class will be held in The Inn at Hudson Gardens.

Community Drum Circle
Join people of all levels of musical expertise to share your rhythmical spirit
in an oasis of beauty! Community drum circles are popping up throughout the
nation as a fun way to celebrate community and life through recreational music
making. No drumming expertise is necessary! All ages and abilities are welcome
to attend this family-friendly event. This guided session will include basic and
traditional rhythms, guided imagery, and freestyle.
Sessions are located at The Inn and may be held outdoors; please dress for the
weather and bring a chair or blanket for seating.
Sessions are scheduled one evening per month from 6-8 PM. Upcoming dates are as

Honeybee Pests and Diseases

What hive threats do beekeepers need to worry about in Colorado? Join
Bee Guardian Bob Shiflet to learn the answer to this and all of the other
questions that may be “bugging” you about honeybee pests. Participants in this
course will discover how to identify symptoms and provide treatment for the
common parasites, mites, and diseases that affect Colorado honeybees. This
session will include a discussion of the implications of these pests, and how
beekeepers can reduce their impact using basic hive inspection techniques.

Birding in The Gardens: Winter Ducks
Date: Saturday, March 3, 9 AM – 12 PM
Walk with us on the wild side! Join Tom Bush, owner of Front Range Birding
Company and member of Audubon Society of Greater Denver, on this journey
to discover of the amazing diversity of ducks that winter in and around
The Hudson Gardens. This tour will include stops along the South Platte
River to discover other avian species that frequent the rich river
corridor. From diving ducks to dabbling ducks, you’ll come away amazed
with the local wildlife and will also pick up basic birding techniques,
identification tips, and so much more! Class will meet at The Gift
Shop. Dress for the weather, bring snacks and a pair of binoculars. No

From Garden to Table: Cool Season Vegetables and Seed Starting
Date: Tuesday, March 13, 6-7:30 PM
Get a jump on the spring growing season by learning the best techniques
for starting your seeds and cool season vegetables! Taught by local garden
center experts, you’ll learn how to start your vegetable garden off on the
right foot, maximizing your enjoyment and harvest. This course will cover
seed selection, care and maintenance for seeds and seedlings, soil
preparation and amendments, and watering methods and requirements. You’ll
also uncover insight as to the best cool crop varieties for the Denver
metropolitan area. This course is part of a four-part series offered
by the Garden Centers of Colorado designed to inspire successful vegetable

Hive startup: Installing Nucleus Hives and
Package Bees
Wednesday, March 14, 6 – 8 PM
Don’t miss this extensive session covering the best techniques for
installing packages of bees and nucleus frames into new and existing
hives. You’ll uncover the ins and outs of nucleus hives versus package
bees, and how to select your bees’ genetic stock based on an overview of
the various honeybee races. This course includes an in-depth discussion of
queening a hive, including marking, placing, and encouraging acceptance.
You’ll also learn how to encourage wax comb buildup and egg laying, and
how to identify the common indicators of a strong hive. Basic beekeeping
equipment and hive inspection techniques will also be discussed.

Modular Train Show Display
Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18: 10 AM – 4 PM both days
For train enthusiasts of all ages! Share in the excitement as model
railroading comes to The Hudson Gardens for this amazing display. Complete
with three operating layouts – the “O” Gauge Lionel exhibit, “G Gauge”
display and On30 modular layout – we’ve got trains for the enjoyment of
all in attendance! Admission is $1 plus one canned food item, which
will be donated to a local food bank.

Growing Roses 101
Date: Wednesday March 27, 6-8 PM
Every garden needs a rose bush (or two or three!). This course, taught by
American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian David Ingram, will cover how to
plant, prune, and care for new and established roses. You’ll also uncover
how to build new rose beds, maintain your roses throughout the growing
season, and prepare them for winter. Discussion will center on the best
rose varieties for the Front Range, and will include tips on species

Learn a systematic approach to opening and inspecting your hives to gain
maximum efficiency with minimal upset to your honeybees. You’ll gain key
insight on how to open your hives, make assessments about the conditions
inside the hive, troubleshoot problems, and record your observations.
Taught by resident Bee Guardian Bob Shiflet, the discussion will also
outline the impact of weather on hive conditions and how it affects
inspections.

Bee Yard Discovery
Saturday, April 21, 9:30 – 10:30 AM
Apply your knowledge about beekeeping with a visit to The Hudson Gardens
apiary! Join resident Bee Guardian Bob Shiflet on an exploration of a
working beehive to explore the different conditions and elements within a
hive. You’ll view various stages of the honeybees within their life
cycles, observe the intricacies of honeycomb, brood, propolis, and honey
production, and much more! Note: participation in this session entails the
risk of bee stings. All participants much bring an EpiPen or
antihistamine, and wear protective clothing.

local garden center experts, you’ll learn why alternative methods such as
raised bed gardening, square foot gardening, and container gardening have
taken off in recent years. You’ll discover the advantages to these methods
and will glean insight as to how to incorporate them into your own
vegetable gardens. This course is part of a four-part series offered

Container Planting Workshop
Date: Wednesday May 16, 6-9 PM
This course, a garden favorite, returns for its third year with a brand
new spin! Take your container gardens to the next level by joining Annie
Huston, co-founder of Columbine Design, for this hands-on experience
creating gorgeous flower combinations that will thrive all summer long.
You’ll learn how to save money (and time) when planning your container
gardens by selecting the right plants, choosing the right number of
plants, and selecting optimal design and planting techniques so your
arrangement thrives. This workshop will also cover plant selection tips
such as choosing plants, judging quality, mixing proven winners with new
varieties, and selecting appropriate annuals for sun versus shade. You’ll
leave this workshop with a beautiful container garden and a new
perspective on planting annuals! Class will be held in the Hudson
Residence. Please bring a garden pot (18” in diameter or smaller), soil,
and gardening gloves – we’ll provide the plants (for both sun and shade),

Landscape Photography

Learn how to capture the special moments in the garden when it’s at its
peak, and how to make special moments of the garden when it’s not! Led by
accomplished landscape photographer and author David Winger, this
two-session workshop will explore digital terminology, composition,
lighting, and post-photograph processing for optimal landscape
photographs. You’ll get the opportunity to apply your knowledge
immediately by taking photos in The Gardens with guidance from the

honey jar. This course will explore the various honeycomb setups and the
common techniques and tools used for extracting, bottling, and storing
honey. Bee Guardian Bob Shiflet leads this how-to session, which will
include information on extracting and using other products of the hive
such as wax, pollen, and propolis. The session will conclude with a
refresher on closing out the beekeeping season and preparing hives for
winter.

Preparing your roses for winter is the key to growing fabulous flowers in
the spring. Learn how and why fall and winter care keeps your roses
healthy from year to year. American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian Peggy
Williams will help you uncover tricks on fall and winter rose maintenance
such as how to encourage dormancy, when to water, how to transplant, and
more. You’ll also learn how to best prepare new rose beds for an early
