The Wetlands

...Flora, Fauna, Fun...

Cattails

Originally a channel of the South Platte River until the June 1965 flood, the Wetlands are our most unique heritage. This 1.25 acre wetland, protected by law, is home to cattails, willows and pondweed, and supports a variety of fauna, including muskrats, raccoons, frogs, toads, an occasional red fox, red-winged blackbirds, orioles and magpies.

The Wetlands offer an incredible educational resource due to the diversity of habitats and environments that exist in this area.

  • Cattails (Typha latifolia) dominate the lower levels
  • West-facing bank predominantly covered with Chokecherry (Prunus viginiana melanocarpa)
  • Duckweed (Lemna sp.) and Plains Cottonwood (Populus sargentii) give the Wetlands unique habitats
  • Look for various plantings at north end: Prickly Cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) and Milkweed (Asclepias)
