Plant of the Month: Dragon’s Blood Sedum Sedum spurium ‘Dragon’s Blood’
-
Garden Location: Garden Railroad, Oval Garden
-
Distinguishing Features: Dragon’s Blood Sedum provides
brilliant winter wonder with its deep burgundy dried flower heads and
contrasting gray stems. Its densely-packed woody stems form a sprawling pattern
which is indicative of its function as a groundcover. In the summer, Dragon's
Blood Sedum has brilliant red flowers (measuring approximately ½" in diameter)
and needle-like leaves that change from green to orange-red in fall. The color
of both the flowers and foliage of Dragon’s Blood Sedum become more intense with
increased exposure to sun.
-
Growth and Maintenance: Dragon’s Blood Sedum is a succulent
groundcover that tolerates extreme heat, cold, and poor soil, making it an ideal
specimen for rock and xeric gardens. It reaches 3-8" in height and spreads
quickly. Although it will grow in a variety of conditions, it prefers full sun.
Dragon's Blood Sedum is low-maintenance and does not require pruning.
