Plant of the Month: Assorted Dogwood Varieties, Cornus sericea
-
Garden Locations: Gift Shop, Hudson Residence, Inn,
Interesting Tree Grove
-
Distinguishing Features: Dogwood is foliage-free during the
winter months, and its colorful stems create a striking contrast to the
otherwise muted landscape. Its slender stalks vary in color, the most common at
Hudson Gardens being red and yellow. Dogwood grows loosely with a rounded habit.
Its leaves measure 2-5” long and fade from medium green in the summer to purple
in autumn before dropping in the winter.
-
Growth and Maintenance: Dogwood is a medium to large shrub,
growing up to 7-9’ in height with an even wider spread of up to 10’. Its native
range covers much of the United States, making it adaptable to various soil and
climate types. However, Dogwood grows best in partial shade to full sun with
moist soil, as it is found naturally occurring along river banks and in
marsh-like areas. This fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub is low maintenance,
requiring only light pruning and spring fertilization if desired.
