|
 |
Don’t be fooled by the quiet dormancy of February! Twisted
branches, peeling bark, and fabulous forms demonstrate that even at rest, The

Plant of the Month: Queen Anne’s Lace, Daucus carota
-
Garden Locations: Wildflower Meadow
-
Distinguishing Features: During the winter months, Queen
Anne’s Lace puts on one of the showiest displays of form. Its delicate stems
rest in a cupped shape and are particularly stunning when topped with snow. When
blooming during the months of May through October, this wildflower appears as
“lacy” clusters of tiny white flowers atop narrow stems. Its foliage resembles
that of a fern and its habit is loose and spreading.
-
Growth and Maintenance: Queen Anne’s Lace can grow up to four
feet in height. This wildflower abundantly spreads its seeds by the wind,
causing it to be classified as an invasive weed in some areas of the country. It
is tolerant of drought and a variety of soil types, and prefers full sun.
-
Did you know: Queen Anne’s Lace is the ancient ancestor of the
carrot. However, unlike the carrot, the root of Queen Anne’s Lace is not edible.
