…February: serenity in The Gardens…
|
|
Don’t be fooled by the quiet dormancy of February! Twisted
branches, peeling bark, and the glimmering blues, grays and silvers of winter
foliage demonstrate that even at rest, The Gardens provides countless
opportunities to revel in beauty.

Featured Plant of the Month: River Birch (Betula nigra)
-
Garden Location: Water Garden (west side)
-
Distinguishing Features: River Birch is a medium-sized tree
that often appears shrub-like with multiple trunks or stems. In the spring and
summer, it displays alternate, simple green leaves that are 1.5-3” in length and
scaly, cone-shaped seeds. The bark of a River Birch tree is its most striking
feature and makes it a “must-see” during the winter months. Appearing in hues
ranging from red to brown, the bark on young trees is smooth but as the tree
matures, the bark becomes papery and often curls and peels.
-
Growth and Maintenance: Native to North America, the River
Birch tree typically attains a height of 25-50’ with a spread of 25’-35’. It
reaches optimal growth in partial shade but will tolerate full sun. Water the River
Birch tree generously, as it prefers rich, acidic and wet soil. It does not have a
conspicuous flower or bloom season.
